Storage and Handling Basics Every Pharma Distributor Should Follow
Medicines are sensitive products. Heat, moisture and rough handling can affect them long before they reach a patient. A few consistent habits go a long way in protecting both product quality and your business.
On receiving stock
- Check the cartons for damage, and match product names, batch numbers and quantities against the invoice.
- Record batch number and expiry date for every item you receive.
- Report any damaged or mismatched stock to the company promptly, with photos.
In storage
- Store products in a clean, dry area away from direct sunlight, following the storage instruction printed on each pack.
- Keep items that need cooler conditions in suitable temperature-controlled storage.
- Keep stock off the floor and away from walls and damp areas.
- Keep damaged, expired and returned items separate and clearly marked.
Tracking and rotation
Follow the first-expiry-first-out method: stock with the earliest expiry date should be dispatched first. Review expiry dates regularly and avoid over-stocking slow-moving items. Good records also make it easier to trace a batch if a query ever comes up.
